Max Rubin's "Comp City" Puts the Humor into Blackjack
Max Rubin is a rarity - a down-to-earth, non-scientist, regular guy who also happens to be a blackjack celebrity. He knows everything there is to know about the game but doesn't take it - or himself - too seriously. While other Blackjack Hall of Famers have long, distinguished resumes, which include heavy-hitting books and papers, Max Rubin is best known for his amusing take on blackjack players, casino owners and everything that lies between them. He is the author of "Comp City," which was published in 1994, and he was inducted into the Blackjack Hall of Fame ten years later.
"Comp City" is a "Guide to Free Gambling Vacations" (the book's sub-title). It is not so much a blackjack tutorial as a guide to gamblers who are looking to get the most freebies out of the casinos. This best-selling how-to book teaches players how to give the illusion of being high rollers in order to get free food and drinks and "comped" hotel rooms and flights. The book has been read by thousands of amateur and recreational gamblers who are in Vegas and looking for comps. Rubin didn't rest on his "Comp City" laurels, however. He went on to become a television personality and was the commentator on the World Series of Blackjack and the host of the Ultimate Blackjack Tour. He is also the Master of Ceremonies at the annual Blackjack Ball.
Max Rubin is a Popular Blackjack Spokesperson
Max Rubin is all about blackjack. He's a sought-after speaker on any subject relating to blackjack in particular and gambling in general. He is considered a leading analyst of the game and usually laces his words with heavy doses of humor, making him eminently readable by millions of avid fans. Rubin's humor leans toward self-deprecating and he calls himself the "undisputed overweight comp champion of the world." Most of the time, though, Max Rubin is considered a serious expert on the subject of blackjack and gambling; he is thought of as one of the leading specialists on the subjects. His knowledge and authority have gained him entrance into the exclusive Blackjack Hall of Fame.
